The following contains spoilers for the game Tales of Symphonia!
Background: Colette is the Chosen of Mana destined to save the dying world of Sylvarant from mana deprivation. She was born with a Cruxis Crystal in her hand, meaning that she was the seventh Chosen. Colette was raised by her father, Frank Brunel and her Grandmother Phaidra, who was a priestess at the Church of Martel, located just outside of Iselia. She was taught to read the Angelic Language at a young age, and when she was old enough, she was to meet the Priests that were to accompany her on her Journey of Regeneration. She also had formal schooling where she met her closest friends, Lloyd Irving and Genis Sage.
On her sixteenth birthday, Cruxis sent down the Oracle, a sign that Colette was to start the Journey of Regeneration. Colette, accompanied by Lloyd and Genis, goes to the Temple of Martel to receive the Oracle. There, a group known as the Renegades (disguised to look like another group called Desians) had attacked the temple in an attempt to kill Colette. The priests that were to accompany her on her journey, died as a result of the invasion. When Colette and the other two reach the temple, the Renegades attack them as well, only to be defeated with the help of a mysterious mercenary named Kratos. Afterward, she meets her “real father” (who is later revealed to not be her real father after all) Remiel, an angel sent from Cruxis to bless her with the Cruxis Crystal and bestow the Tower of Salvation upon Sylvarant. The next day, she leaves with Kratos and Raine Sage to begin her journey. They are later joined by Lloyd and Genis.
Colette traveled to every part of the world in order to release the seals on the Summon Spirits that governed the mana of Sylvarant. At each of the five seals, Colette sacrificed a part of her humanity. She first lost her ability to taste, which was shortly followed by the inability to sleep, feel, or speak. After releasing a seal, Colette would become afflicted with a sickness that Raine eventually named “Angel Toxicosis”. Also with the release of each seal, she gained angelic abilities, enhanced sight and hearing as well as superhuman strength. At the final seal in the Tower of Salvation, Colette was to give up the final part of her humanity: her heart and her memories. Remiel then attempts to take the now unresponsive Colette to Derris-Kharlan where she would undergo the process of having Martel’s soul downloaded into her body. Lloyd objects to this and the group (which now includes Sheena Fujibayashi), fights and kills him. Kratos appears and also attempts to take Colette, denying that she would die during the downloading process. A group designed to look like the Desians called the Renegades rescue Colette and the others. Eventually, the group is forced to flee to a parallel world called Tethe’alla.
Once in Tethe’alla, Colette eventually regains her true self due to Lloyd carving a special charm into a necklace he had made for her birthday and attaching it to her Cruxis Crystal. She also retains her angelic abilities. Not long after meeting Zelos Wilder and Presea Combatir, Colette is captured by the Desian Grand Cardinal named Rodyle. Rodyle attempts to use her to complete his creation the Mana Cannon but his plans go awry when he realizes that Colette has called Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium, a rare disease that slowly crystallizes the body. Lloyd and the others rescue her but her condition is not revealed to them until later, when they are back in Sylvarant and she is attacked and injured by the Grand Cardinal Forcystus. They then search for a cure, traveling all over Tethe’alla and learning about the Hero Mithos, and about how the world was split into two by the power of the Eternal Sword. They are eventually able to cure Colette’s illness.
Colette is again captured in the Tower of Salvation after Zelos betrays the group by Mithos and taken to Derris-Kharlan, where he successfully downloads Martel’s soul into Colette’s body. Martel uses Colette’s body to tell Mithos that what he was doing is wrong and that he needs to stop. Zelos then reappears and attaches a Key Crest to Colette’s Cruxis Crystal, and Martel leaves her body. Colette urges the rest of the group to stop Mithos at all costs, having understood Martel’s wishes.
After Mithos is defeated, and the worlds are reunited with a new Mana Tree, Colette goes back home to Iselia and reveals that she is no longer the Chosen.
Personality: Colette is a kindhearted, selfless girl. She is rather clumsy, but her clumsiness often produces beneficial results, from disarming a trap, to making Colette- shaped potholes in walls. She always puts others before herself, even if it costs her injury or worsening of her own problems. She doesn’t like burdening others with her problems so she often keeps them secret from everyone else until something happens that forces her to reveal them. She a bit clueless, often missing things that are completely obvious to others, and often comes to wrong conclusions about various situations. She apologizes constantly, feeling the need to take all the blame, even when there is none. Colette is also extremely forgiving, believing it better to forgive someone for their wrongdoings instead of rejecting them. She adores all animals, especially dogs, and she enjoys giving them (often rather silly) names.
